INGREDIENTS

dough:
  • 3 – 3½ cups fresh milled flour*
  • 1 pkg active dry yeast
  • 1 ¼ cups milk
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • ¼ cup Crisco
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 egg
filling:
  • 1 – 2 Tbsp butter (melted)
  • 2/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1½ Tbsp cinnamon
icing:
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 – 4 Tbsp milk or water

METHOD

  1. In a large mixer bowl combine 1 1/3 cup of flour and the yeast.
  2. Heat together milk, sugar, Crisco, and salt until warm. Add to dry ingredients in mixer bowl.
  3. Add egg. Beat at low speed for 30 seconds. Then on high for 3 minutes.
  4. Stir in enough remaining flour to make a soft dough and roll out in rectangle on counter (about 1/4-1/2 inch thick).
  5. Using a brush, spread enough melted butter over the top to coat it. Mix together remaining filling ingredients and spread evenly over the top.
  6. Roll up into a log & cut (I like to use floss- it is so easy to get a clean cut without smashing the roll).
  7. Place in greased baking pan and let rise till double (approx. 1 hr).
  8. Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Watch carefully to avoid burning.
  9. Icing: Stir together powdered sugar and vanilla. Add milk or water until desired consistency. Drizzle over warm or cooled cinnamon rolls.

TIPS for cinnamon rolls made with fresh milled flour

  • *You can also use regular flour. The fresh milled will just have a slightly different texture.
  • A food mill works great- we like our NutriMill Grain Mill
  • Use floss to get a nice clean cut for your cinnamon rolls.
