INGREDIENTS NEEDED

  • Sugar – I like to use cane sugar, but white sugar or any granulated sugar will work.
  • Flour – All-purpose or bleached flour is usually what I have on hand. Pastry or gluten-free flour would also work great.
  • Cocoa Powder – organic cocoa is recommended and want I like to use. However, you can choose your favorite, regular, raw, or even dark cocoa powder (You may want to add more sugar/sweetener if you use dark cocoa powder).
  • Salt – I only use Redmond Real Salt in my kitchen, but regular salt or sea salt will work.
  • Baking powder
  • Chocolate Chips – I typically use semi-sweet, but if you’re a dark chocolate fan I would give them a try! Milk chocolate would also work if that’s all you have on hand. It may be a little sweeter though.

SUPPLIES YOU MAY NEED

  • Mason Jar – I love to reuse jars that are not good for canning, like old store-bought mayonnaise or spaghetti sauce jars. Wide mouth jars also work great.
  • Funnel – A canning funnel works great to keep the flour dusting and sugar glitter off your counters.
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Tags – Add decorative tags with quick recipe and baking instructions, especially if you are gifting a jar.

assemble the mix in jars

Gather as many jars as you would like to fill up with this delicious brownie mix. Wide mouth, quart jars work best for this recipe. However, if you are keeping it for yourself, you could use a bigger glass container and multiply the recipe to meet your needs. Remember this recipe is for an 8×8 inch pan, so be sure to double it if you find yourself always using a 9×13 inch pan (You will need bigger than a quart size jar though).

When you are ready to assemble, you can choose to dump all the ingredients and mix it up or layer them in the jar. I prefer to layer them in when I am gifting for aesthetic, but if it’s just my family I’ll do a big batch in one container and mix it all up.

Once you have all of the ingredients in the jars, add a two-piece jar lid & ring, some twine, and our printable tags with baking instructions for gifting. Or just add a lid for yourself and store on your shelf.

FINISHING TOUCH- BAKING INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Preheat oven to 350 F.
  2. Remove chocolate chips from top of mason jar, add remaining dry ingredients to 6 Tablespoons melted butter.
  3. Add 2 eggs & 1 teaspoon vanilla.
  4. Stir with a spoon until batter is smooth and well blended. Avoid over mixing.
  5. Stir in 3/4 of chocolate chips.
  6. Spread in an 8×8 inch greased pan. Sprinkle remaining chocolate chips on top.
  7. Bake at 350 for 30-35 minutes. Remove from oven when brownies are still a little gooey in the middle, if you’re a gooey brownie lover. Let cool before cutting.

Enjoy with a hot cup of coffee or cold glass of milk!

STORAGE & SHELF-LIFE

This brownie mix in a jar will be good on your shelf at room temperature for up to a year. If your ingredients are new or you store in a cool and dark place, it will last even longer.

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Bake Time: 35 minutes
Total Time: 40 minutes

From store-bought to homemade. Stock your pantry with this delicious irresistible brownie mix from-scratch. Quick, easy, and no special ingredients needed.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients- Mix in Jar

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup cocoa
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 pkg chocolate chips

Ready to Bake, Add:

  • 6 Tablespoons butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

MAKE THE BROWNIE MIX IN A JAR:

This recipe makes one quart mason jar mix for one 8x8inch pan of brownies. Double, triple, or quadruple the recipe to meet your pantry needs.

  1. Mix or layer your dry ingredients (sugar, flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, salt, and chocolate chips) and store in a mason jar, Ziploc bag, or other sealed storage container.
  2. Add a lid or seal tight. Gift to a friend or store in your pantry for 6-12 months.
  3. Repeat steps 1 & 2 to meet your pantry or gifting needs.

BAKE THE BROWNIES:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Melt butter (I like to use a saucepan, over low heat). Remove from heat.
  3. Add dry ingredients, except chocolate chips (we will add those later).
  4. Add eggs and vanilla.
  5. Stir with a spoon until batter is smooth and well blended.
  6. Stir in 3/4 of the chocolate chips.
  7. Spread in an 8x8 inch greased pan. Sprinkle remaining chocolate chips on top.
  8. Bake at 350 for 30-35 minutes. Enjoy!

Notes

  • When you are ready to assemble your jar, you can choose to dump all the ingredients and mix it up or layer them in the jar. I prefer to layer them in when I am gifting for aesthetic, but if it's just my family I'll do a big batch in one container and mix it all up.
  • This brownie mix is good for up to 1 year on the shelf in a sealed container depending on the age of the ingredients when making.
  • I like to take the brownies out of the oven when they are still slightly gooey in the center as brownies will continue to set and bake.
  • I know you will want to dive into these irresistible brownies but let them cool COMPLETELY before cutting or you’ll end up with a mess.
