  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ⅔ cup granulated sugar
  • 4 tablespoons butter (room temperature)
  • 3 large egg yolks
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • canola oil for frying
glaze:
  • 2½ cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 5 tablespoons water
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla
  • pinch of salt

METHOD

  1. Cream butter and sugar in mixing bowl
  2. Add eggs and mix until fluffy (about two minutes)
  3. Mix in sour cream
  4. Mix in dry ingredients and blend thoroughly
  5. Cover and chill for one hour

TIPS for old fashioned donuts

  • Substitute Homemade Cake Flour – Whisk together 3/4 cup + 2 TBSP flour and 2 TBSP cornstarch. Use by substituting equal weight or volume when a recipe calls for cake flour
  • I have made these donuts with regular all purpose flour. They still turn out great but the texture is a little bit heavier.
  • Make sure the oil temperature is not to high or too low. I like to use a cast iron dutch oven to a keep consistent, even temperature.
