An occasional sweet breakfast treat or snack for the kids around the homestead creates memories that keep them coming back. Nothing like starting a Saturday morning with a few soft and fluffy but crispy old fashioned glazed donuts. It’s true, since yeast is not required they come together quick and easy!

- 3 cups cake flour (If you don’t have cake flour, you can make your own – see below)
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ⅔ cup granulated sugar
- 4 tablespoons butter (room temperature)
- 3 large egg yolks
- 1 cup sour cream
- canola oil for frying
glaze:
- 2½ cups confectioners’ sugar
- 5 tablespoons water
- ½ teaspoon vanilla
- pinch of salt
METHOD
- Cream butter and sugar in mixing bowl
- Add eggs and mix until fluffy (about two minutes)
- Mix in sour cream
- Mix in dry ingredients and blend thoroughly
- Cover and chill for one hour
- Roll dough out to 1/2″ thick and cut donuts to desired size
- Heat oil to 330 degrees.
- Drop donuts in hot oil. They will sink but pop up in a few seconds. Cook about two minutes or until golden brown.
- Flip and cook on second side about one minute. Remove to cooling rack or paper towel.
- Glaze while still warm.
TIPS for old fashioned donuts
- Substitute Homemade Cake Flour – Whisk together 3/4 cup + 2 TBSP flour and 2 TBSP cornstarch. Use by substituting equal weight or volume when a recipe calls for cake flour
- I have made these donuts with regular all purpose flour. They still turn out great but the texture is a little bit heavier.
- Make sure the oil temperature is not to high or too low. I like to use a cast iron dutch oven to a keep consistent, even temperature.
