Trees on the century farm

diary page from 1867 written in pen and ink.

Our century farm has had several mature nut trees here for years. I study photos in attempt to track down when they were planted. Diaries also notate several fruit trees being planted in a new orchard shortly after Cortez moved his family here in 1867. The fruit trees have disappeared over the years.

Since moving here a year ago, I have planted twelve new fruit trees. I also planted these two young maple trees early this spring. While most of what we plant is with the purpose of pursuing self sufficiency, the maple trees are mostly for pleasure. I love color. I love red. It makes me happy to see them showing color in their first year of life. I can only imagine the brilliance they will continue to deliver for years to come.

Thankful comes in the little things like color.
