Stayed at home today warm and pleasant.
C.F. Robertson
That diary entry from over 150 years ago says so little but says so much. C.F. documented the important things of the day – the weather and the work – or maybe if someone visited or was sick.
Not once in the years and years worth of diaries did the Robertson’s mention worldly issues. The things at home mattered most.
The Robertson’s had come from Michigan and had been settled in Missouri on the century farm for about two years.
Diary after diary documents the daily life on the farm. Mostly weather updates and whatever task was at hand. Five consecutive days “dug potatoes” with one day accounting “24 bush”.
Since moving to the century farm a little over a year ago, we have discovered so many treasured things. If doors could tell us of all the people that walked through them. If walls could tell us of all the gatherings that happened within them. But I am thankful for the diaries.
My previous “forever home” was just as I wanted it to be. I designed and decorated it from start to finish. But this house, this home, this farm – it speaks to me in ways no other place of residence ever has. This home tells me of the past, the present and the future. It tells me to slow down and take every moment in. It tells me to treasure life and document in my mind or in writing, the small everyday things. For these are the most important.
